as law-enforcemant official, one of the most fundamental things is treating every1 equally. he/she shouldn't treat a harvard prof any differently.

if must finding sth the cop could have doen better, it should be how to deal with "racial" issue in a more sensitive way. he should have anticipated the possible suspicious feelings and be more genteel, say how about like this:

"sir, looks like the whole thing to be a misunderstanding. we are just responding to a phone call about possible break-in. now if you would pleas ekindly show some id, we 'll be our way out"
